Landfill site fire prompts warning to shut windows

Residents have been warned to keep "all doors and windows closed" due to a fire at a landfill site.

Emergency services were called to Seaton Meadows in Hartlepool at about 08:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Four fire crews are at the scene and people have been advised to avoid the area.

The fire involves a number of tyres and Cleveland Police said the situation was being "monitored".

There are currently no road closures.

Cleveland Fire Brigade said it continued to deal with the incident at the site, off Brenda Road.

The fire service added: "At this time, we advise members of the public to avoid the area and all residents and businesses near to keep doors and windows closed and minimise time spent outside.

"If you must go outside, to minimise your exposure, limit the amount of time you spend outside in the smoke.

"If you experience any symptoms, please seek medical advice by calling NHS 111.”

The Environment Agency urged people living and working nearby to follow advice from the fire service and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

“We are supporting our professional partners in the tactical coordination group to respond to the ongoing incident at Seaton Meadows landfill," a spokesperson said.

"Please stay inside and keep windows and doors shut."
