A 12-year-old riding an electric scooter has been seriously injured in a crash with a car.

The boy had been on the footpath to the south of West Denton Way, Newcastle, and was trying to cross at the junction with Earsdon Close just before 17:00 GMT on Sunday when he was hit by a red Volvo V40.

He was taken to hospital and remains in a life-threatening condition, Northumbria Police said.

The 48-year-old driver of the Volvo, who stopped at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has been released under investigation.

The road was closed for a number of hours but reopened to traffic at 21:30.
