A serving Essex Police officer has pleaded not guilty to a charge of the assault by beating of a woman.

Lee Mullen, 52, was arrested on 29 September following reports a woman was pushed to the floor following an argument in Elmstead Market earlier that day.

Mr Mullen, who lives in Colchester, was off duty at the time and has since been suspended, Essex Police said.

On Monday, Ipswich Magistrates' Court remanded him on unconditional bail until the next hearing, which is due at the same court on 2 December 2026.
