Amputee making exceptional progress - physio

A specialist physiotherapist working with quadruple amputee Lily McGarry from Jersey, has praised her "exceptionally good progress".

Lily was an accomplished triathlete studying for a medical degree in Wales, when she fell ill with meningitis early this year.

After receiving months of treatment at different hospitals, she is now continuing her rehabilitation at Llandough Hospital near Cardiff.

Specialist physiotherapist Kate Sherwood said: "Lily is incredible to work with. She's very well motivated, she's extremely determined and she is willing to try and explore every option, so that creates a lot of opportunities for her."

Miss McGarry says she wants to return to Jersey in November to "recuperate and reflect".

"I'm so looking forward to seeing my grandparents and some friends back home."

Formerly a keen surfer, the 24-year-old said she would also like to spend some time on the beach where possible, adding that she will be using her time in the island to think about her future.

"It will be the right place for me to be while I consider if I go back to university next September, or whether I will be ready for that.

"We will have to see."

Ms Sherwood said Lily "has a lot of challenges but she's facing them all head-on and she is making exceptionally good progress."

She added: "It's been really a joy to be a little part of and to be able to watch the progress she's made.

"She's had her upper limb prosthetic for her left arm fitted recently and she's just working on what she can do with that.

"She'll have the one for the right arm fitted relatively soon."
