Work to replace 2.2 miles (3.6km) of water mains is due to begin later in an area "prone to leaks and bursts".

Yorkshire Water said the year-long £1.5m project in Keighley was aimed at reducing leaks, improving the reliability of drinking water supply and preventing water main bursts.

Temporary traffic management will be in place around the area, which will move as work progresses over the next year.

Project manager Scott Gammon said: "This is a vitally important scheme which will help us to deliver the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect – loss of supply and disruption should be much less likely going forward."

He added: "We'll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum while we deliver this important work."

The project starts on Braithewaite Avenue, with mains also set to be replaced on North Dean Avenue, Bankfield Drive, Whinfield Close, Coronation Way, West Bank Close, West Bank Rise, Hill Top Way, Hill Top Walk, Braithewaite Drive and Whinfield Avenue.

The work is part of Yorkshire Water's £406m scheme to replace more than 621 miles (1,000km) of water mains over the next five years.

Mains replacement schemes have already been completed in Laisterdyke, Oakworth and Lower Wyke.
