Firefighters tackle 15 tonnes of burning scrap metal

Dorchester fire station said in a post on social media that "crews were faced with a well developed fire".

Firefighters have extinguished a fire involving 15 tonnes of scrap metal.

Crews from Weymouth and Poole were called just after 16:00 GMT on Friday to reports of a blaze at the Abbey metals site on St Georges Rd, Dorchester.

Dorchester fire station said in a post on social media that "crews were faced with a well developed fire".

It added that firefighters "worked hard to contain and extinguish the fire" using four appliances, along with the help of onsite staff and their machinery.

No-one was injured in the blaze and firefighters said it was "in a bunded area," which means there was a constructed retaining wall around the metal.

A bunding wall is often created around the storage of potentially polluting substances.

The service said the site was re-inspected at 09:00 and there was no indication as to what caused the fire, however, it was not believed to be deliberate.
