A 21-year-old accused of leaving the UK to join up with extremists from so-called Islamic State (IS) has appeared in court.

Mohammed Mohamoud, of Francombe Grove in Horfield, Bristol, is accused of the preparation of terrorist act, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Mohamoud, wearing a black hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms, spoke only to confirm his identity and stood with his arms folded during his brief appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier.

He was remanded in custody by the judge until a further hearing on 3 February.
