About 125 people could lose their jobs after a synthetic textile manufacturer announced the potential closure of its UK factory.

US-based Invista told staff at its Gloucester site that plans were being considered to move its operations to Canada and China.

Invista said up to 125 employees' jobs were at risk and a consultation would be launched if plans go ahead.

Brook Vickery, the firm's CEO, said the proposals are not a reflection of workers' performance, but rather a response to the current market environment.

"Our top priority now is ensuring the safe, stable operation of our facilities as we work through the changes necessary to evaluate and, if approved, implement these proposals," he added.

Invista produces the chemical intermediates, polymers and fibres that go into materials like nylon and polypropylene, which are then used in a vast range of products.

The Brockworth facility sits on the site of the former Gloster Aircraft Company, which first opened more than 100 years ago and produced military aircraft during the Second World War - including the first British jet.

Matt Griffith, director of policy at Business West, said that the possible closure of Invista will have a big impact on the area.

"This will be a big shock for Gloucester and the wider county, which has a significant manufacturing footprint," he said.

"While we can't comment on the specifics of this case, it highlights the very challenging environment many businesses face today, with rising costs, weaker demand and ongoing trade pressures."

Some of the staff at Invista are represented by Unite the Union.

Unite regional officer Michael Hobbs said: "Unite is very disappointed to hear of such big job losses at Invista, which will have a major impact on our members there as well as the local community.

"Our main focus now is on trying to protect jobs. We will explore all avenues we can and seek relevant support to try to prevent the loss of this manufacturing facility and the jobs in the Gloucester area."
