Bradford Council has begun an enforcement investigation into an unauthorised development on one of the city's busiest roads.

A number of large caravans, clad with wooden planks, have been placed on a car park on Thornton Road next to Water Lane.

No planning permission has been granted for any work of this kind on the site, so the council is investigating.

The unauthorised works are opposite a major redevelopment site set to house a low-carbon energy plant and two drive-thru businesses.

The development "does not benefit from planning permission", the council said

There is no indication of what the structure will be used for or who is behind the work, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Plans have also been submitted for a data centre on the same site, and an aparthotel on a neighbouring piece of land.

Asked about the works on the car park, a Bradford Council spokesperson said: "The development on the land does not benefit from planning permission and an enforcement investigation has been opened."
