Westmorland and Furness Council said it was still committed to all aspects of Windermere Gateway

A new masterplan is being drawn up to develop a tourist area's transport hub after a controversial project was put on hold.

Westmorland and Furness Council has announced the appointment of a contractor to draw up plans for the Windermere station area in the Lake District - a Unesco World Heritage site.

This is part of the controversial Windermere Gateway project, which planned almost 250 new homes but which was put on hold in January after doubts emerged it could meet the right timetable for funding.

Jonathan Brook, leader of the Lib-Dem council, said "sensitively creating an enhanced gateway" to the Lake District was a "critical component" of the overall project.

He said: "Creating this vision will put us in a much stronger position when lobbying for funding to make this a reality."

The council said the design work, costing £150,000, would look into creating better connections for walking, cycling, taxis, and buses.

It added it had already submitted plans to the government hoping it would agree to fund a new Lakes Line passing loop and platform, aiming to double train frequency and reduce road congestion.

The plans had also included an affordable housing scheme at the Orrest Head Farm site within the Lake District National Park.

Brook announced in January the scheme was being paused as it could not progress to the timescale imposed by the conditions of a £10m funding deal from Homes England.

He said: "Working together, the partners are committed to all aspects of Windermere Gateway.

"Creating a world-class welcome for rail and bus passengers would boost the local transport infrastructure and enhance the experience of travelling for everybody who lives, works or visits this area."
