A former Wolverhampton mayor, who is one of the city's longest serving councillors, plans to retire after 34 years of service.

Labour councillor Milkinder Jaspal "built a reputation for strategic leadership, financial stewardship, and strong governance" during his three decades at the council, the authority said.

He was first elected to the Heath Town ward in 1991 and served as mayor in 2013-14.

He retires as chairman of the £22bn West Midlands Pension Fund and has held several senior positions within the council, including becoming the youngest and first ethnic minority director appointed to the Birmingham Airport Board.

The council said that throughout his career, Jaspal had been recognised for his dedication to residents and staff and as a trailblazer for representation and diversity in public life.
