John Henderson has now been jailed twice for raping boys

A former sailor who is already serving a prison sentence for raping a boy has been jailed for a further 14 years for his earlier abuse of another child.

John Henderson, who served in the Royal Navy, was jailed for 14 years in 2019 for offences against one child, but was back at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday for his offences against a second victim.

Henderson, formerly of Amble in Northumberland, raped the boy after asking if he wanted to "play", then bought him sweets to stop him telling anyone, the court heard.

The 39-year-old admitted rape and sexual assault of a child, with a judge saying he posed a high risk to children.

The offences occurred before the ones for which Henderson was jailed in 2019 and also ordered to serve an extra year on extended licence, the court heard.

Prosecutor Sam Ponniah said Henderson asked the boy "do you want to have some fun" before raping him, then bought him sweets to "persuade him not to say anything".

In a statement read to the court, the victim said what happened was "disgusting" and he "felt guilty" Henderson had gone on to rape another child.

Judge Gavin Doig said Henderson had been a "model prisoner" for the past seven years but it was "clear major issues remain".

He said Henderson still posed a significant risk of serious harm to children.

Henderson was also ordered to serve a further four years on extended licence upon his eventual release from his latest sentence.
