A community council in Moray has asked local people to donate their Christmas trees to help with the expansion of a sand dune restoration project.

Lossiemouth Community Council uses the trees to shore up sand dunes by placing them in a trench in the town's East Beach.

Earlier this year the project received £15,000 from Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation to continue the work for another two years.

The project is to be expanded to include Lossiemouth's West Beach in the new year.

Carolle Ralph, who chairs the community council, said that previously they had dug 300 trees into sand dunes on the east side of the town.

"This year we're hoping to work on the East and West Beach," she said.

"In the new year we will look to form a process of digging a trench and putting the trees in situ, backfilling the trench and then waiting to watch the sand begin to attach to the trees."
