School closed over asbestos concerns
GoogleA Wolverhampton secondary school closed on Monday after concerns were raised when an "unknown substance" was found in the school hall.
Wolverhampton Girls' High School said it took the precautionary decision to close due to the possibility the substance contained asbestos.
"As with many buildings constructed before 1999, there is a potential for materials to contain asbestos, and therefore immediate specialist advice was sought," a spokesperson for the school said.
The school added that specialist contractors carried out tests and confirmed that the material did not contain asbestos.
The spokesperson said the actions were taken out of an abundance of caution.
"We believe they were the right steps to safeguard everyone on site," they said.
"The school will reopen as normal tomorrow, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers, and the community for their understanding and support."
