A scheme providing furniture and white goods to people on low incomes is to close after 32 years, with rising costs, funding challenges and a shortage of volunteers listed among the reasons.

Shrewsbury Furniture Scheme, which is based at Hartley Business Park on Monkmoor Road, said it would cease operating at the end of March.

As part of its work, it recycled unwanted furniture which would otherwise have gone to landfill. But all collections have now stopped.

It said there was "sadness" for the volunteers and staff who had "done so much in a friendly and happy atmosphere".

The charity said many smaller charities had also been experiencing "more challenging situation for grants and donations", while seeing costs go up.

In November the scheme closed its shop on Castle Street after 11 years of trading, and said the "unsettling economic environment" made business no longer viable.

It confirmed it would continue to sell items at its Monkmoor base until the end of March.
