PD Dexter began his police dog career in April 2017

Nottinghamshire Police's longest-serving police dog has been retired from the force after more than eight years' service.

Malinois cross PD Dexter was a qualified firearms support dog and general-purpose dog, which meant he was skilled in tracking.

His handler, PC Jonathan Whysall, said: "If he could, he'd still be doing the job – but age catches up with us all.

"It's only fair that he now has the chance to put his paws up."

His achievements included tracking and detaining multiple burglars over several miles, and locating weapons linked to multiple offences

"Dexter was an excellent all-round police dog who achieved some outstanding results in his career. He was absolutely dedicated to me and fiercely protective," he added.

"I had complete faith in him and always knew I would come home safely if he was with me.

"Above all, he really loved what he did. He loved coming into work and being with me right up until the end of his service."

On average, police dogs serve for about six years, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Dexter retired in December and will be cared for by PC Whysall.
