Work has begun on a new £21m primary school in Skye.

The project in Broadford also includes a nursery, gym hall, public library and council service point.

The primary is due to be completed by next summer following a long running campaign for a new school.

A separate community project to build an all-weather, floodlit sports pitch also forms part of the overall site.

Kate Forbes, deputy first minister and SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, said she was "thrilled" construction had started.

She added: "I share in the excitement pupils and teachers have, along with the wider community, for the school and the facilities it will bring to Broadford."

Highland Council's education committee chairman John Finlayson said it was a "momentous occasion".

He added: "It has taken a huge deal of energy, commitment and vision to get us to this stage, but the end result will be first class facilities for the school and wider community."
