'Overwhelming support' for plan to reopen airport
BBCPlans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) have the public's "overwhelming support" officials said following the results of a poll.
City of Doncaster Council said more than 10,000 people took part in a survey to "help shape the future use of the airport", with 93% in favour of the £193m project.
DSA closed in late 2022 after operators said it was no longer financially viable, but the council is now working to bring passenger flights back by summer 2028.
Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones, said: "It's great to see so many local people respond and give their views on the future use of the airport. Thanks to everyone who took the time to do so."
In September, South Yorkshire council leaders and regional mayor Oliver Coppard approved the spending of almost £160m of public money on the airport, with councillors agreeing in November to a £57m loan to further the plan.
The council said the majority of people who took part in the poll wanted to see it "used for package holidays and short breaks", with 89% of respondents saying they would use the airport once it reopened.
Jones said: "I know people want to see the airport reopen as soon as possible and I share that impatience, but we need to follow the required steps as part of our plan to get it reopened.
"We will take on board what people have told us and use that to help shape the future reopening."
She said 2025 had been "an exceptionally busy year, but one that has been critical in getting us to the point where we are today".
She added: "Thank you everyone for your continued support: the public, South Yorkshire leaders, businesses and local campaigners.
"Let's look forward to 2026 with aspiration and determination."
