Crews attended a fire at the Queen's Medical Centre on Friday evening

The emergency department at a hospital in Nottingham remains "exceptionally busy" following a fire, an NHS trust has said.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust said crews attended the fire in the emergency department of the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) on Friday evening.

In an update on social media in the early hours of Saturday, the trust said teams "acted quickly" to move a number of patients out of the department to receive care while the fire service responded.

The trust added the incident had been resolved and the emergency department was "fully operational again, but remains exceptionally busy".

It added it was grateful to the ambulance service for holding handovers, as well as to the fire service for their "swift and professional" response.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was called to the hospital at 20:28 GMT.

"A fire was located in the structural void and was extinguished using one hose reel jet," a spokesperson said.

A structural void is a gap between two walls or ceilings within a building, but it is not yet known what caused the fire.

The spokesperson added: "Once extinguished, crews revisited the site periodically throughout the night to reinspect and ensure no further heat sources were present."
