A hotel in Guernsey is set to close for the next four winters as part of major refurbishment plans to transform the site.

The four year project to improve the Cobo Bay Hotel started in October as its owners look to bring the building "up to date".

The works include a full kitchen restoration, a new toilet block and a brand new 50 cover restaurant.

The hotel said it would close each winter to allow for the works to be completed but would remain open to the public throughout the summer months.

Work is already underway on phase one of the project to create new staff accommodation, and revamp the sea front terrace dining area.

The hotel also said two new fully accessible bedrooms would be built later and it hoped to create a third-floor extension in the current roof space, to accommodate six further bedrooms.

Owner Jamie Nussbaumer said he was "acutely aware" that the hotel was "beginning to look tired".

Nussbaumer said his grandparents bought the building back in the 1960s when it was just a pair of semi-detached houses before his parents completed the most recent major refurbishment of the hotel in the late 1980s.

He said the extension into the roof space was "a no brainer" as the roof needed to be replaced and hoped the new restaurant would allow for a "year-round food offering" while minimising its regular winter closure time.
