A man has been charged with attempted murder after a woman in her 70s was left injured.

Eugene Pope, 23, of Harwell Street, in Plymouth, was charged with attempted murder, assault by beating, possession of a bladed/pointed article in a public place and possession of cannabis.

Police were called at about 09:20 GMT on Friday to reports that a woman had been assaulted near Hastings Terrace. She was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

Pope has been remanded in custody and will appear before Plymouth Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The force was also informed of reports that a second person had been assaulted in the area earlier that morning, with the woman in her 30s suffering minor injuries.

Armed officers attended the area and a cordon was put in place, which has since been removed.
