Photographers in the South West have captured spectacular images of the Northern Lights.

The photos were captured from Mevagissey in Cornwall to Appledore in Devon.

The aurora was visible from about 19:00 BST on Thursday.

BBC Weather said it was the strongest and most widespread showing of the phenomenon in the UK since May.

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
