Firefighters found an outbuilding next to the club shop "well alight"

Macclesfield Football Club's ground has been targeted by arsonists, police said.

Cheshire Police said a deliberate fire had been set in two portable toilets at the Moss Rose stadium on London Road at about 01:15 GMT.

The club, which competes in National League North in the sixth tier of English football, said the "situation was under control" and no injuries had been reported.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said officers arrived at the stadium and found an outbuilding next to the club shop "well alight".

The fire service said it had attended after receiving reports of a fire visible over a wall into the stadium, and concluded it had been started deliberately.

A spokesperson said: "Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using hose reel water jets.

"They remained at the scene until 04:30, damping down and using a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots."

Cheshire Police said enquiries were ongoing.
