Bid launched for UK Town of Culture competition
LDRSA town has officially launched its bid to become UK Town of Culture 2028.
The Kendal Town of Culture Partnership has been put together for the competition which could bring £3m into the Cumbrian town for a year of cultural events.
Caz Graham, chair of the group, said Kendal had a "gloriously rich history and heritage" and the investment would "make a huge difference" to the town.
The partnership wants suggestions from locals to help shape the bid and decide what the programme could involve.
Launched by the government, the winning town will receive £3m and two runners-up will get £275,000.
The Kendal partnership is a new collaboration of more than 25 prominent arts, community and business groups alongside venues and is being supported by the town council.
'Sense of pride'
Graham said: "We've a gloriously rich history and heritage, a proven track record for delivering first rate, successful and popular arts events.
"Kendal hasn't benefitted from some of the government funding that's helped boost culture and arts in other parts of the county and we think the investment of Town of Culture could make a huge difference.
"It's well recognised that culture matters; it's good for the soul, makes people happier, helps build communities and could do wonders for bringing renewed energy, life and purpose to our town centre, as well boosting our sense of pride in Kendal itself."
Towns have until 31 March to enter expressions of interest.
The government aims to announce a shortlist in the spring, with a winner announced early next year.
