The Shields Ferry has not been running since late January due to damage to a landing point

A ferry service will remain suspended during February after further structural problems were discovered at a damaged landing area.

The Shields Ferry, which runs across the River Tyne between North Shields and South Shields, has been closed since 29 January due to damage to its north landing caused during Storm Chandra.

Operator Nexus has now said inspections found more issues with the structure and repairs would take "longer than first anticipated", with the service out of action for the whole month.

A replacement bus service is running and ferry tickets are also being accepted on Metro services.

John Souter, head of customer service operations at Nexus, said: "The works that we need to carry out are extensive and will take at least a few weeks to complete.

"We're sorry for the ongoing inconvenience caused to our customers."
