A man was washed off a pier on the North Yorkshire coast, prompting a warning from the coastguard.

Rescue teams from Staithes and Whitby were called to Staithes Harbour at about 11:45 GMT on Tuesday, where members of the public had helped to pull the man from the water.

The casualty was taken to the lifeboat boathouse to be assessed by a doctor but needed no further treatment.

Waves are expected to continue to crash over the pier in the coming days due to the current weather conditions, with the coastguard warning people to avoid the pier at present.

In a statement shared on social media, Staithes Coastguard, part of the volunteer coastguard rescue service, said the "outcome could have been very different".

"Aside from being extremely cold and wet, all persons were fit and well," a spokesperson said.

The Met Office predicts more unsettled and wintry conditions into the new year, with snow and ice warnings issued for some parts of the country.
