More than 3,000 children and young people across Wolverhampton and the Black Country are to attend an orchestra performance as part of an initiative to expose children to live music.

Free tickets have been provided by Wolverhampton Music Service to 34 schools for two concerts taking place at venue University of Wolverhampton at The Halls on 12 February.

Pupils would hear music from composers including Purcell, Beethoven, Saint Saëns and Stravinsky, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

Ciaran O'Donnell, head of Wolverhampton Music Service, said it was important every child had the opportunity to hear a live orchestra during their school days.

"I always describe Wolverhampton as an extra musical place," O'Donnell said.

"To be able to create a combined orchestra with over 100 musicians, supported by an audience of 3,000 children from local schools, in a venue as renowned as The Halls, is really pioneering stuff."

City of Wolverhampton Council member Jacqui Coogan added the event would "highlight the city's musical strength".
