Amphitheatre's windows smashed twice in two weeks

The windows at a seaside amphitheatre have been smashed for the second time in two weeks.

About 10 windows at Sandhaven Beach, in South Shields, were smashed by vandals on Friday.

It comes after South Tyneside Council was forced to make temporary repairs to the windows on 19 January after blocks of ice were used to break the glass.

Northumbria Police said it was working to "address pockets of disorder" in the area.

In a social media post, the council said: "It saddens us to post, but unfortunately several more windows have been deliberately damaged at the foreshore [on Friday 26 January].

"Thanks to two lovely dog walkers, we were alerted to this just after 8pm."

The council's out of hours team cleaned up the glass.

Northumbria Police confirmed it received a report of criminal damage at about 19:35 GMT on 26 January.

A force spokesperson said: "It was reported a group of unknown offenders had smashed the glass of approximately 10 windows in the walkway.

“Officers were deployed to the scene, however those believed to have been involved had already fled the area.

“A number of inquiries are ongoing to locate those responsible – with neighbourhood officers carrying out increased patrol activity to offer reassurance to the public."
