People are being urged to keep celebrations "merry and safe" by choosing licensed taxis for new year journeys.

Guildford Borough Council (GBC) said people should only use approved vehicles as they have been subjected to "rigorous" safety checks and are fitted with CCTV to protect both drivers and passengers.

Licensed taxis are also insured and have fares set by the local authority, it added.

GBC said people should look for the taxi's licence plate and driver ID before they board, with all approved vehicles displaying official identification on the rear plate and front doors.

Merel Rehorst-Smith, lead councillor for regulatory services at GBC, said: "As we deck the halls and enjoy the festivities, let's also remember to prioritise safety.

"Choosing licensed taxis is the way to go to ensure your night ends on the right note."

The council said this year it had secured extra funding from Surrey Police to put on more taxi marshals during busy nights.
