A new pet cemetery is being created in Hailsham

Work will begin in February on a new pet cemetery in East Sussex.

It is hoped the facility with in Hailsham Cemetery, will open by the end of March.

Hailsham Town Council said the decision to create it was taken when it was realised the town's nearest alternative was in Lewes.

The new pet cemetery will have room for 100 plots, with space for the ashes of up two pets in each.

Mary Laxton, chair of the council's assets management committee, said: "For many people, pets are beloved members of the family, and their loss can be deeply felt.

"This project aims to provide a dignified and local place where residents can lay their pets to rest and remember them in peaceful surroundings."

She said: "The concept has been carefully considered to ensure the area is respectful, attractively landscaped and well maintained, giving families a special place to visit for years to come.

"It is our hope that the new pet cemetery will offer comfort and solace to those experiencing the loss of a cherished companion and provide a meaningful place of remembrance for the community."

Each plot will be 12 inches by 12 inches (30cm by 30cm), and will cost £99 for each pet.

Grave markers or memorial plaques will be limited to seven by five inches (17cm by 12cm).
