A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after two men were reportedly attacked with a metal pole at a park in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police said officers were called to Castle Gardens, close to St Nicholas Circle, at 02:00 GMT on Sunday by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Both of the men – who are in their 60s – were taken to hospital, the force said, with one continuing to receive treatment and the other discharged.

The force said the boy was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and remained in custody.

Police said they were making local inquiries to understand the circumstances of the attack

The assault is believed to have happened inside a hut at the park between midnight and 02:00.

Det Sgt Vicki Hudson said: "Our investigation into this incident is very much still ongoing.

"Following some enquiries, we have made an arrest, but we are still keen to speak to anyone who may have information that can assist.

"I would like to hear from anyone who was in the area in the early hours of this morning – did you see anyone acting suspiciously near the park? Did you see anyone entering or leaving the park between the times given?

"Any information you have, no matter how small it may seem, could help with our investigation."
