Multiple crews have been called to the Leicester Royal Infirmary after a fire broke out at a building on the site.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said it was called at 14:59 GMT on Thursday after a fire broke out inside the meeting room on the fourth floor of the Balmoral Building. It added the fire was now extinguished and smoke was clearing.

The service said it had seven fire crews and its aerial ladder platform in attendance.

It added the hospital remained open for business as usual.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said there would be a temporary closure of the Balmoral lifts, with people advised to use the Windsor building lifts as an alternative.

"Patient care and services are unaffected. Thank you to everyone who has helped to manage the situation so swiftly and to colleagues in the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service for their support," the spokesperson added.
