A63 fully reopens after lorry bridge strike

A stretch of the A63 in East Yorkshire that was closed after a lorry hit a bridge has fully reopened.

Police were called to the Dale Road bridge in Elloughton at about 15:00 BST on Monday.

Earlier in the day, National Highways said the eastbound carriageway, which was initially closed, had reopened after being "confirmed safe for traffic to pass underneath".

The agency later said the westbound carriageway between the A15 to Hessle and the A1034 near South Cave, which had been shut to enable officials to assess the damage, had also reopened.

The Dale Road bridge has been struck a number of times in recent years.

It was closed for repairs in 2023 after a lorry carrying a forklift truck crashed into it, causing damage that took two years to repair.

In May, another lorry carrying a digger hit it and another bridge on the A63.

Local councillor Richard Meredith described the situation as "hugely frustrating" and the area was a "victim of geography".

"There is an industrial estate at Melton and this is the first low bridge," he said.

"It's not low by legal terms, it's just low if you've got an abnormal load. So if someone's going to hit a bridge it is going to be this one."
