Plans have been approved to build two padel courts in an East Yorkshire market town.

They will be built at the Driffield Rugby Union Club off the A164 on the outskirts of the town.

The courts will be placed on a part of the site that is currently used for storage, the application said.

In addition to the playing surfaces, the plans also include a new reception hut and picnic benches.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Yorkshire Padel Clubs Ltd said the existing facilities and clubhouse would be made available to those using the padel courts.

The application was supported by Kirkburn Parish Council which said it would "assist Driffield RUFC in its continued expansion and the ability to provide additional access to sport and recreational activities for more people".

However, the parish council added the land used for the padel courts had previously flooded and asked for the floodlighting to be designed to "not affect the amenity of local residents".

Padel has been described by the Lawn Tennis Association as "the fastest growing sport in the world".

It is a mixture of tennis and squash and is played on a court which is 25% smaller than those used for tennis and has a wall around it, which can be used to play shots off.
