The blue toll booths on the Tamar Bridge have been gradually replaced with the final one being lifted out at 18:30 GMT on Friday

People travelling over the Tamar Bridge on Friday have been told they might "catch a glimpse of something special".

Tamar Crossings said its final toll booth would be lifted out at about 18:30 GMT so it could be repaired and replaced.

It said it had been working to refurbish and replace all the toll booths on the bridge over the past year.

People travelling on the bridge while the work is taking place are advised to follow traffic management signs and check which lanes are open and available.

Tamar Crossings said the toll booths were badly in need of replacement.

"After around 15 years of service, they were ready for some well-earned TLC – including repairs to stop leaks, a fresh coat of paint, and most importantly, the installation of improved air filtration systems," a spokesperson said.

They said the air filtration systems would help protect toll collectors by reducing exposure to vehicle fumes and create a healthier working environment.

"After the weekend, all of the booths across the toll plaza will be looking smart and refreshed," they added.
