Murder arrest after woman fatally stabbed in Ipswich

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was stabbed to death.

Police were called shortly after 19:10 BST on Tuesday to reports of a stabbing on Burrell Road, Ipswich.

They found a woman in her 20s with serious injuries who died before reaching the hospital.

A 27-year-old man was arrested in Ipswich on Wednesday afternoon.

Supt Andy Martin told BBC Look East that the victim and suspect were "well known to each other", while two potential weapons, both knives, were recovered.

"Residents will continue to see an increase police presence in the area as our investigation continues," he added.

"We would continue to urge anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant you may feel it may be, to contact us."

A police cordoned remains in place in the area and the road and nearby river path, just off Bridge Street, have been closed.

The skatepark at Stoke Bridge has also been closed by officers.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact the police.

Specifically anyone with CCTV or doorbell cameras in the area between 18:30 and 19:30 on Tuesday is urged to review the footage for officers.

Sophie Watson, 55, who lives nearby, found out about the incident when she attempted to come home but found her way blocked by the cordon.

"We have very little trouble on this road, " she said.

"I've lived here for 21 years and it can get a bit noisy sometimes with the station and the football ground.

"It's perfectly safe and I get on perfectly well with my neighbours.

"It's an absolute tragedy - it doesn't matter how or why, it's a tragedy when someone loses their life in that way."

Pawel Sliwinski, 18, has lived in the area for the past eight years and said it was "shocking".

"It's terrible. I feel bad that that happened to that person," he said.

"I don't know what else to say because I'm still so shocked.

"I don't feel safe on this road."
