Teenagers who use a youth service have encouraged other young people to make use of the facilities and activities it offers.

Lara and Isabella, both 16, rehearse with their band at the St James Centre which is run by Jersey Youth Service (JYS).

They said being part of the service which has just marked its 80th anniversary had helped give them confidence while taking part in a range of activities.

Isabella said: "People need to know about it more - it's not necessarily there's nothing to do - it's just no one knows about it."

The JSY has just celebrated its 80th anniversary with an exhibition as part of National Youth Work Week.

Lara and Isabella said they wanted to raise awareness of the service among other young people.

Lara said: "It's so good to have this here because it's a space where so many people can come and it's accessible for so many plus there's so much to do here."

The JYS said about 35% of young people aged 12 to 18 in the island engaged with its services.

But earlier this year Jersey's children's commissioner expressed concerns about the lack of affordable and accessible activities for teenagers on the island.

Isabella and Lara said they hoped that by sharing their experiences they would help show more young people about the opportunities available at JSY.

Lara said: "If you don't try it then you'll never know". Isabella added: "Take the opportunities that are out there - it's really great that we have them".
