A teenager has been charged after police seized a large sword in the middle of a city.

Officers were patrolling around the Pipers Row area on Friday in Wolverhampton city centre and stopped a 17-year-old boy, after he saw them and tried to flee, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.

A large sword was discovered and the boy was arrested for possession of a knife. He was then charged with possession of a knife and is due to appear before magistrates later this month.

The police patrols were part of Project Guardian, a scheme set up to tackle knife crime and youth violence, the spokesperson added.
