The charity said reopening the post office would be a "complex process"

Lawyers have advised the Wigtown Book Festival against trying to reopen a post office in the town.

The organisation was exploring the possibility of restoring provision after it was removed more than two years ago.

It said it had been working with the Post Office and taking detailed legal and financial advice.

A statement added that lawyers had told them it would "not fall satisfactorily" within its charitable purposes but it would now look at other options.

"There may still be a way forward by creating a separate trading company to manage the post office," said the statement.

"This is a complex process and we are currently exploring what viable options there might be.

"We appreciate that this has meant a delay in reaching a final decision on this and sincerely apologise for any frustration or inconvenience this may have caused."
