Leon Phillips, 47, was found fatally injured in Stapleton Road on Monday night

A man who was stabbed to death in Bristol has been named by police as detectives continue to question four suspects.

Leon Phillips, 47, of St Phillips, was found with serious injuries in Stapleton Road at about 22:55 GMT on Monday and died in hospital the following morning.

A post-mortem examination found Phillips died from multiple knife wounds and a murder investigation has been launched by Avon and Somerset Police.

Seven men were arrested after the incident and detectives have been given more time to question four of them. Two others have been released on bail while the final man was also released and will face no further action.

Avon and Somerset Police said officers who were out on patrol at the time of the alleged murder witnessed a group of men acting suspiciously as they drove down Stapleton Road.

"[The officers] were able to respond within seconds of the fatal attack and pursue the group, who had made off from the scene, and detain, search and arrest them," a spokesperson for the force said.

The spokesperson said its major crime investigation team had since questioned suspects and carried out forensic, CCTV, and digital enquiries. Several witnesses have also been spoken to.

Supt Deepak Kenth, of the neighbourhood policing team, said high-visibility reassurance patrols were taking place in the area.

"We have been working closely with nearby schools to reassure staff, parents and children and have a mobile police station set up near the scene, should members of the public wish to speak with our officers face-to-face," he added.

"Incidents of this nature have a significant impact on our communities and we are endeavouring to keep the public informed as the case progresses."
