Safety improvements are to be made at a junction in Leicestershire following a rise in "traffic levels and safety concerns".

Four-way traffic lights, new signs and street lighting will be installed at the crossroads where Charley Road meets the B591 near Copt Oak, with work due to begin on Monday 2 February.

Leicestershire County Council said the project is taking place after motorists also reported issues with vehicles failing to give way, leading to crashes and hold-ups.

The council's member for highways and transport, Adam Tilbury, said: "Installing traffic signals will enable controlled and safer turning manoeuvres from all arms of the junction."

He added: "We would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience during these essential works, which are expected to deliver long-term improvements for all road users."

The work is expected to take about eight weeks, and drivers have been advised to expect some delays while it is carried out.

The council added that once complete, journeys may take slightly longer at peak times, but it is hoped the improvements will manage traffic more effectively.
