The £500,000 works to improve play equipment at Queen's Park are due to begin this month

A children's play area at a park in Leicestershire is set to be improved at an expected cost of about £500,000.

Much of the play equipment at Queen's Park in Loughborough will make way for modern replacements, Charnwood Borough Council said.

There will be 24 new pieces of equipment added to the area, including accessible and sensory learning apparatus for children.

Among the improvements are a sensory dome, trampoline and a wheelchair carousel, with work due to begin this month and to take about four months.

Work to install a new zip line, five-way swing and new gym equipment, which will be added to other areas of Queen's Park, is planned to start first.

The council said the work to the main play area would begin in February, with the space closed while this took place.

'Important investment'

Other additions to the play area include a four-bay swing, sign language play panel and Junior Kilimanjaro multi-unit.

Queen's Park will remain open during this time, the council added, but the New Street entrance will be closed while the work is done.

Anne Gray, the council's lead member for open spaces, said there would be "something for toddlers to teenagers to enjoy" when the works were complete.

"The Queen's Park play area is extremely popular with families and I am really pleased that we are able to upgrade the equipment to make sure that more children can enjoy the park," Gray said.

"I am also pleased that we have a number of accessible and sensory items being added to the park to make sure that every single child can come and have a great time."

The council said the products for the work would be provided by Made Green, which comprises up to 95% of post-consumer recycled materials.

Lynda Wesson, member of the Friends of Queen's Park, said: "It is fantastic to work with the council on the plans for the improved play area and investments like this one are always so important."
