Head teacher 'delighted' at school's recognition
Nonsuch High School for GirlsLeaders at two Surrey schools named as among the best in the region say they are "delighted" at the "great" recognition.
Nonsuch High School for Girls is named state secondary school of the year in the South East and South Farnham School is the highly-commended primary school of the year for 2026 in a Sunday Times list.
Head teacher at Nonsuch, Alexis Williamson, said it had "created a real buzz around school".
William Wallace, acting head teacher of South Farnham, said it was "beyond words" to be recognised.
Mr Wallace said: "The amount of time and effort that goes in to help prepare these children for life, it's great to get that recognition."
He said that having a large intake meant more staff, ensuring each child had "bespoke" support.
"Our staff to teacher ratio is one to 13, so to have that ratio means that every child is getting the best support that they can," he added.
South Farnham, which was also ranked the second best primary school in the South East, has more than 800 pupils.
Mr Wallace believes the manner in which "every subject is championed" played a part in why South Farnham was recognised.
He says this means that, "at some point in the school day", every child gets to enjoy the subject where they really excel.
Mrs Williamson said: "For me as head, this award feels like meaningful validation of the long hours, dedication and unwavering commitment of my staff.
"The whole school community is delighted to have received this award as recognition of the hard work, of not only our students but our staff and our families."
The selective school on the Surrey border, named after the palace that once stood in the park in the 16th Century, has just under 1,500 pupils and a "thriving" sixth form.
"When a student feels supported both academically and pastorally, they're able to thrive and ultimately achieve far more," Mrs Williamson said.
Elsewhere, St Andrew's Catholic School in Leatherhead is the second-ranked comprehensive secondary school in the South East.
Head teacher Alan Mitchell said: "St Andrew's success is built on its ethos of developing the whole person.
"The school provides experiences and opportunities that help students grow in character, raise aspirations, and prepare them for happy and successful adult lives.
"Its focus on hard work, resilience, and belief in every student's potential remains at the heart of this achievement."
The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 also recognised independent schools such as Guildford High School and Brighton College.
