Two men died in a head-on crash days before Christmas, an inquest has heard.

Mathew James Hardy, 34, and Daniel Atkinson, 40, both mechanics, crashed into each other on the A487 Porthmadog bypass on 20 December.

Senior coroner for North West Wales Kate Roberston said Hardy, from Abererch, Pwllheli, was driving north in an Iszu recovery truck towards Tremadog, and Atkinson, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, was heading south in a VW Golf.

Both men died at the scene.

Roberston told the inquest: "It appears an oncoming vehicle collided with him [Hardy]."

The coroner said she had asked for post-mortem examinations of both men.

She said she was awaiting details relating to Hardy, but gave an initial cause of death for Atkinson as "multiple injuries".

The inquest for both men was adjourned as investigations continue.
