Manchester Piccadilly will be shut to many trains from 14-22 February

Manchester Piccadilly rail station is closed to some trains for nine days as part of a £7.9m "once in a generation" upgrade.

Network Rail said it was modernising tracks, points and signalling systems in the area around the station as part of improvements to six railway lines serving the station.

It means there will be no services in and out of London, to the Midlands or to the east across the Pennines until 22 February.

Here is all you need to know about the disruption and how it may affect you.

What dates exactly will be affected?

The station will be closed to trains from the south and east - platforms 1 to 12 - on the following dates:

14-22 February

1 March until 13:00 GMT

22 March until 13:00

Which trains will still operate?

Platforms 13 and 14 will remain open for services running on a reduced timetable to:

Liverpool Lime Street via Eccles and Earlestown

Blackpool North via Bolton

Chester via Earlestown (Sundays only, for the Transport for Wales service)

Will the station's facilities stay open?

Yes. The station facilities will stay open, including the ticket office, passenger assist lounge, toilets, retail outlets and Metrolink services.

Are there any alternative travel options?

Yes there are detailed alternative travel options listed on Northern's website while the works are taking place with a number of rail replacement buses in service.

Ten extra buses will also run throughout the day on the 192 bus route to help keep people moving.

And trams will be running as normal and serving Piccadilly during the work.

Can I use my rail ticket on buses and trams during the work?

Yes. Transport for Greater Manchester said rail tickets will be accepted across a range of Bee Network bus and Metrolink services on affected routes.

Is there any other advice to be aware of?

Network Rail is advising passengers to travel light, allow extra time for their journey and be prepared to queue, as stations and rail replacement services are expected to be very busy.
