Town sinkhole repairs to continue 'for a few days'
Jewel MiahWork to reopen a Loughborough town centre street shut due to a sinkhole will continue "for a few days", Leicestershire County Council said.
The defect in Bridge Street was reported to highways teams late on Saturday night.
The road - part of the Inner Relief Road town centre bypass - has been closed for safety reasons since then, leading to disruption.
Advising that investigations and repairs will take "the next few days" the county council thanked drivers for their patience.
A council spokesperson said: "We are working on it - we anticipate for the next few days while our teams investigate the cause and carry out the necessary repairs.
"The road is still closed - we're advising motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes wherever possible.
"Thanks to everyone for their patience while we work to resolve this safely and as quickly as we can."
Jewel MiahDrivers are being asked to follow a diversion along Toothill Road, Meadow Lane, the A6004 Belton Road and the A6 Derby Road while the closure is in force.
Councillor Jewel Miah, leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said the disruption was compounded by issues on the M1 earlier in the week.
He said: "They came straight out to investigate and make the road safe.
"As a major through road it had caused severe disruption to the town centre and coupled with the accident on the motorway on Monday afternoon caused severe delays to motorists.
"I am hopeful that the works will be completed soon and the road can get back to normal."
