Investigation into fire at airfield closed

An investigation into a fire at a Grade II*-listed World War One aircraft hangar has been closed after "all lines of inquiry" were "exhausted", police have confirmed.

The blaze gutted one of the hangars at the historic Old Sarum Airfield, on Lancaster Road in Salisbury, in April.

The building was completely destroyed, alongside an adjacent restaurant and café.

One person was initially arrested on suspicion of arson but was later released with no further action taken.

In a statement on Salisbury Police's Facebook page, Det Sgt Toni Nugent said: "We know this fire caused concern in the community, particularly as it destroyed a listed property.

"The fire report could not determine whether the fire was started deliberately or accidentally."

Det Sgt Nugent thanked the "many people" who had shared footage of the incident, adding: "We followed all relevant lines of inquiry but could not identify any further suspects."

She said while the investigation had been dropped for now, the force would "of course investigate" if any new information came to light, and urged anyone with information to contact police.
