A man who discovered a hand grenade in a biscuit tin in his shed said "it all got a bit exciting" when police and and the bomb squad arrived to deal with the device.

Danny Wyatt, from Hellesdon, on the outskirts of Norwich, was clearing out a shed in his garden on Wednesday when he found the old biscuit tin full of light switches – and the grenade.

Norfolk Police was called to Riverside Close at about 11:00 GMT and the Army's explosive ordnance disposal was later called to the scene.

"I really wasn't expecting to find a hand grenade, that's for sure... it's pretty heavy, there's a pin in it and it looked just like a hand grenade I had seen on TV before," Mr Wyatt said.

"I stopped for a minute, gathered my thoughts and thought, 'Is this real? Is this really a grenade?'

"[I] studied it a bit and decided it was a real live hand grenade with a pin in it."

A 100m (330ft) cordon was put in place and the grenade was eventually safely detonated at 15:55 GMT.
