A police officer who allegedly used excessive force during an arrest is due in court charged with assault after an investigation by the police watchdog.

PC Leonard Fogg, 27, based at Basildon police station, has been charged with assault by beating.

During the arrest of a woman, PC Fogg is accused of using a knee strike and an incapacitant spray. He is also alleged to have punched her in the back.

He is due at Ipswich Magistrates' Court next week.

Essex Police made a referral in March to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

In August, the IOPC sent a file to the Crown Prosecution Service, who authorised the charge.
