Man jailed for killing pedestrian in hit-and-run

A man has been jailed for killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash.

Leon Salt, 21, pleaded guilty in July to causing death by dangerous driving after 51-year-old Christopher Deaville died at the scene of the crash on Newcastle Lane, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent on 11 April.

Mr Deaville was crossing the road at about 21:00 BST when he was struck by a black Mini Cooper driven by Salt, who was overtaking another car at speed, Staffordshire Police said.

Salt on Friday was given an 11-year sentence, and must serve two thirds in custody. He was also disqualified from driving for 15 years and one month.

Salt, of Bilton Street, Stoke-on-Trent, drove away from the scene of the crash, and the damaged Mini, which had false plates, was found dumped in an alleyway.

Police said he handed himself in on 14 April after officers put out an appeal for information.

During the July hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Salt also admitted handling stolen goods, assault on an emergency worker, escape from lawful custody and dangerous driving.
